Every 90s kids and their babysitter know of one neurotic yet lovable wallaby going through very adult stuff tackling surprisingly grown-up issues, it’s Rocko! Everyone’s favorite anxious baby wallaby is back along with his pals on a TV movie special titled: Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling. Curiously, the movie will not be featured on its home channel, Nickelodeon but Netflix.

Static Cling was slated to air on Nickelodeon last year as a part of a TV special but somehow, it was not aired. The rights to the special were eventually sold to Netflix and the reboot is set for release next month.

Rocko’s Modern Life needs no introduction but unless you live under a rock (or you’re not old), the series is based on the (mis)adventures of Rocko, an immigrant wallaby, his dog Spunky, and his friend Heffer in O-Town. The show had its fair share of controversy back in the day for presenting mature topics and adult innuendoes.

Rocko’s Modern Life only lasted 4 seasons but has a cult following. Netflix recently dropped the teaser of the special and from the looks of it, the story will revolve around Rocko returning from space after a 25-year absence and coping with the many changes back in O-Town. Rocko and his friends were blasted into outer space in 1996 and return to the 21st century, a world where iPhones rule and technology is bleeding fast.

The trailer revealed how Rocko tries to keep up with technology, social media, 3-D printers, and basically everything that 2017-ish technology brought but struggle to fit into a strange new world. The situation worsens when he finds out that an instant-print kiosk replaced his job at the Kind-of-a-Lot-O-Comics.

“Rocko has trouble accepting this 21st-century modern life, while Heffer and Filburt embrace every aspect of new technology, social media and the endless diversity of food trucks. Rocko whole-heartedly believes that his nostalgia for the past can save him from the tortures of the modern world,” the press release said.

Rocko also found out that his favorite TV show has been axed and worked to bring the show back on the air. He succeeds and become a celebrity in O-Town.

The TV special reunites Rocko’s Modern Life creator Joe Murray with the original voice actors of the series, including Carlos Alazraqui, Tom Kenny, Mr. Lawrence, Charlie Adler, Linda Wallem, Joe Murray, Jill Talley, and Steve Little.

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling comes to Netflix on Aug. 9, 2019.
