Warner Bros has been careful not to reveal too much details about Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey (save for a theaters-only teaser) but the studio did reveal the movie’s official poster on Instagram. And boy, it’s as kooky as we expected:
With the tagline “Mind Over Mayhem,” the poster puts the dazed Harley Quinn front and center while small, winged versions of the Birds of Prey cast are flying and fighting around her.
The movie finds Harley Quinn with her own crime-fighting gang that includes Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress, and Rosie Perez’s Renee Montoya squaring off against Ewan McGregor’s Roman Sionis (Black Mask) and Chriss Messina as serial killer Victor Zsasz to rescue a teen – and future Batgirl – Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).
Writer Christina Hodson says that Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) won’t be a traditional team-up movie. “Margot knew she wanted to tell a ‘Harley Quinn plus girls’ story. That was kind of where she began with it. She knew she wanted a girl gang. She wanted Harley to have friends,” Hodson added.
Actress Margot Robbie was heavily involved in the making of the movie. Apart from pushing for a girl gang, Robbie also insisted on a female director and got exactly that.
Robbie assured fans that unlike Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey would be R-rated. The film is directed by Cathy Chan and is scheduled for release on Feb. 7, 2020.
